The Committee

Background: Community development has historically been a core business value. The community has long been held as a major stakeholder in any organization, for the reason that it creates the quality of life that nurtures the organization and its other stakeholders – owners, employees, and often, suppliers and customers. Beyond the enlightened self-interest of companies to develop their local community, it is posited by some economists that community development is the sole purpose of a business.

The CRC promises to be a major force in the economy of the New River Valley. Companies at the CRC are characterized by entrepreneurial, start-up organizations with little or no history of community involvement. Where community development previously was driven through organizations such as churches and service clubs such as Rotary, new models of development have evolved that are more likely to be embraced by the companies at the CRC. In order to help these companies fulfill their potential, it is important to create a structure to involve them in community development.

Purpose: The purpose of the CRC Community Development Committee (CIP or “committee”) is to promote, facilitate, coordinate, and recognize CRC individual business community development activities. The central function of the committee is to cultivate the culture of community development activity within the CRC and its individual businesses.

Scope: The community is defined as the New River Valley – the city of Radford and the counties of Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, and Pulaski. The committee will focus solely on aspects of community development, not general charitable development. National campaigns where contributions/activities do not directly support the community will not be addressed by the committee.

Activities: The committee will meet monthly to plan activities. The committee will sponsor an annual event to promote community development programs, and recognize individual company involvement. Other programs will be developed by the committee.

Composition: The committee will be comprised of the President of the CRC, the Tenant Programs Manager of the CRC, one representative each from the United Way and the CFNRV, and up to five CRC company representatives. Committee members will serve a two year term.
